My friend, the forgiveness of God involves the complete transformation of character. It is the Spirit of God that works upon the heart of the sinner, that they may be brought to repentance, and that their sin may not be imparted to them.
Sin is more than just the sinful things that we do, it is the fruit of our carnal hearts. We can no more produce righteousness than an apple tree can produce oranges. What is needed is a total transformation of heart. This transformation is found only in Jesus Christ.
When we accept Christ as our Savior, we are in that very moment saved, for Jesus has said "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." (John 5:24). This is the work of Justification. "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:" (Romans 5:1). This peace is not a future state, but is a present reality that we accept by faith.
But while we have been justified by faith, there is still a work of fitting us for heaven. The marks that sin has made upon our characters is manifested in the sinful habits of our lives. This must be worked out by Jesus so that we may be fitted for heaven, for no unclean thing will defile it. This is the process of sanctification and we are to cooperated with the Spirit of Christ working within us, that we may be cleansed from all unrighteousness. It is the work of our whole lives.
My friend, there may have been times when you felt that you were not saved: times when you fell back into sin, but I am here to reassure you that once you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, you are already saved; you have passed from death unto life. In the work of sanctification the work that we do is not to save us, but to fit us for heaven. Our salvation is not dependent upon our performance but upon the performance of Jesus. "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" (Philippians 1:6).
May you cooperate with the Spirit of Christ in your heart, that you may be fitted for heaven.
God bless,
