Purging From Sin
Today's Text

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 6:5
As the prophet Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he was amazed, and, overwhelmed with a sense of his own weakness and unworthiness, he cried, “Woe is me! ...”

Isaiah had denounced the sin of others; but now he sees himself exposed to the same condemnation he had pronounced upon them. He had been satisfied with a cold, lifeless ceremony in his worship of God. He had not known this until the vision was given him of the Lord. How little now appeared his wisdom and talents as he looked upon the sacredness and majesty of the sanctuary.... His view of himself might be expressed in the language of the apostle Paul, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Romans 7:24....

“Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:6, 7.

The vision given to Isaiah represents the condition of God's people in the last days. They are privileged to see by faith the work that is going forward in the heavenly sanctuary.... As they look by faith into the holy of holies, and see the work of Christ in the heavenly sanctuary, they perceive that they are a people of unclean lips—a people whose lips have often spoken vanity, and whose talents have not been sanctified and employed to the glory of God. Well may they despair as they contrast their own weakness and unworthiness with the purity and loveliness of the glorious character of Christ. But if they, like Isaiah, will receive the impression the Lord designs shall be made upon the heart, if they will humble their souls before God, there is hope for them. The bow of promise is above the throne, and the work done for Isaiah will be performed in them. SDA Bible Commentary 4:1138, 1139.

My Thoughts:
My friend, The work that Jesus, our High Priest, is doing in the heavenly sanctuary above, is the work that must be accomplished in our hearts today. The body is the temple of the Spirit of God, and by the indwelling of Christ, He must cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The sin that has been wrought within our hearts has defiled us and has made us unfit for heaven, but "For God so loved the world, that he gave us his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16). "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." (1 John 5:11).

Keep Silence Before Him
Today's Text

The Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

Habakkuk 2:20
From the sacredness which was attached to the earthly sanctuary, Christians may learn how they should regard the place where the Lord meets with His people. There has been a great change, not for the better, but for the worse, in the habits and customs of the people in reference to religious worship. The precious, the sacred, things which connect us with God are fast losing their hold upon our minds and hearts, and are being brought down to the level of common things. The reverence which the people had anciently for the sanctuary where they met with God in sacred service has largely passed away. Nevertheless, God Himself gave the order of His service, exalting it high above everything of a temporal nature.

The house is the sanctuary for the family, and the closet or the grove the most retired place for individual worship; but the church is the sanctuary for the congregation. Testimonies for the Church 5:491.

In the name of Jesus we may come before Him with confidence, but we must not approach Him with the boldness of presumption, as though He were on a level with ourselves. There are those who address the great and all-powerful and holy God, who dwelleth in light unapproachable, as they would address an equal, or even an inferior. There are those who conduct themselves in His house as they would not presume to do in the audience-chamber of an earthly ruler. These should remember that they are in His sight whom seraphim adore. Patriarchs and Prophets, 252.

Those who assemble to worship Him should put away every evil thing. Unless they worship Him in spirit and truth and in the beauty of holiness, their coming together will be of no avail. Prophets and Kings, 50.

It is your privilege, dear young friends, to glorify God upon the earth. In order to do this, you must direct your minds away from things that are superficial, frivolous, and unimportant, to those that are of eternal worth. Messages to Young People, 265.

My Thoughts:
My friend, Jesus came to reveal the character of God to man; to direct their minds to the almighty God that sent His only begotten Son to redeem us from our sins. How sad it is that so many do not reverence and honor Him as they should. Many neglect the great salvation that is offered to them freely.

By our sinful natures we have lost sight of the holiness of the Father, and do not realize the great and wonderful gift that has been wrought out for our salvation. We do not value the gift of the only begotten Son of God.

Our very natures are sinful and we need a power outside of ourselves to be saved. We need the holy and righteous nature of God who gives it to us through the life of His Son. "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;" (John 5:26).

My friend, the gift of God cannot be received unless we receive the only begotten Son of God into our hearts.

The Lord is in This Place
Today's Text

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not. And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

Genesis 28:16, 17
True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence. With this sense of the Unseen, every heart should be deeply impressed. The hour and place of prayer are sacred, because God is there. And as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor, the feeling that inspires it will be deepened. “Holy and reverend is his name,” the psalmist declares (Psalm 111:9). Angels, when they speak that name, veil their faces. With what reverence, then, should we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips! Well would it be for old and young to ponder those words of Scripture that show how the place marked by God's special presence should be regarded. “Put off thy shoes from off thy feet,” He commanded Moses at the burning bush, “for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5. Prophets and Kings, 48, 49.

God is high and holy; and to the humble, believing soul, His house on earth, the place where His people meet for worship, is as the gate of heaven. The song of praise, the words spoken by Christ's ministers, are God's appointed agencies to prepare a people for the church above, for that loftier worship into which there can enter nothing that is impure.... God sees every irreverent thought or action, and it is registered in the books of heaven.... Nothing is hid from His all-searching eye. If you have formed in any degree the habit of inattention and indifference in the house of God, exercise the powers you have to correct it.... Practice reverence until it becomes a part of yourself. Messages to Young People, 265, 266.

My Thoughts:
My friend, in and of ourselves there is nothing that is good. Our lives have been corrupted by sin and thus our natures are sinful. What we need is a transformation of soul. This comes when we accept Jesus, the only begotten Son of God as our Savior. When we do this, He creates within us a new heart, a heart that is free from the nature of sin. It is as holy as He is because it is His Spirit that lives within us.

This we should not take for granted. The new birth is the renewing of life within us. Though the carnal nature still lives, we now have the power to resist the things of the carnal nature, and as Jesus was victorious in the wilderness, so too will be be victorious in Christ Jesus.
