Peace Through the Cross

Today's Text There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1

If sinners can be led to give one earnest look at the cross, if they can obtain a full view of the crucified Saviour, they will realize the depth of God's compassion and the sinfulness of sin. The Acts of the Apostles, 209. As your conscience has been quickened by the Holy Spirit, you have seen something of the evil of sin, of its power, its guilt, its woe; and you look upon it with abhorrence. You feel that sin has separated you from God, that you are in bondage to the power of evil. The more you struggle to escape, the more you realize your helplessness. Your motives are impure; your heart is unclean. You see that your life has been filled with selfishness and sin. You long to be forgiven, to be cleansed, to be set free. Harmony with God, likeness to Him—what can you do to obtain it? It is peace that you need—Heaven's forgiveness and peace and love in the soul. Money cannot buy it, intellect cannot procure it, wisdom cannot attain to it; you can never hope, by your own efforts, to secure it. But God offers it to you as a gift, “without money and without price.” Isaiah 55:1. It is yours if you will but reach out your hand and grasp it. The Lord says, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” Isaiah 1:18. “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.” Ezekiel 36:26.... Go to Him, and ask that He will wash away your sins, and give you a new heart. Then believe that He does this because He has promised .... It is our privilege to go to Jesus and be cleansed, and to stand before the law without shame or remorse. Steps to Christ, 49-51. When at the foot of the cross the sinner looks up to the One who died to save him, he may rejoice with fullness of joy; for his sins are pardoned. Kneeling in faith at the cross, he has reached the highest place to which man can attain. The Acts of the Apostles, 209, 210. Thank God for the gift of His dear Son, and pray that He may not have died for you in vain. The spirit invites you today. Come with your whole heart to Jesus, and you may claim His blessing. As you read the promises, remember they are the expression of unutterable love and pity. The great heart of Infinite Love is drawn toward the sinner with boundless compassion. “We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Ephesians 1:7. Yes, only believe that God is your helper. He wants to restore His moral image in man. As you draw near to Him with confession and repentance, He will draw near to you with mercy and forgiveness. Steps to Christ, 55. My Thoughts: My friend, the love of God is given to us through His Son. Our problem with sin is that by our sin we are separated from God; separated from His life. The gift that was given at the cross was ratified by the resurrection of Jesus, that He may impart His life to us through the indwelling of His spirit in our lives. This work is not a work that we can do on our own, it is a miracle of God that we lay hold of by faith. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6). "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13). The gift of God to us is more than just the sacrifice of His Son on the cross. It is the gift of the life of His Son that through Him we may be cleaned from all unrighteousness. The life that was given to Adam was a holy and righteous life. A life that was in the image of God, though not the life of God. Through Adam's transgression that life had become tainted by sin that grew to become more and more corrupt as it was passed down from generation to generation. When the Son of God became a man, He took upon Himself the likeness of sinful flesh. He took upon Himself the hereditary weakness and the propensity to sin, but being from God, He took with Him the nature of God, the anchor that secured Him to heaven that He may redeem us from our fallen state. The life that is now offered to us is not just a righteous and holy life, but the very life of God Himself. "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5:19). The life that is in the Son of God is the very life of God. "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;" (John 5:26). "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." (1 John 5:11). My friend, the life that we have inherited from Adam is a sinful life, a life that is separated from God. The gift of God is His life given to us through His Son. There is nothing that we can do to earn it, we simply accept it by faith. As we draw nigh unto God with confession and repentance, He draws nigh unto us with mercy and forgiveness. God bless,
