My friend, Jesus said to Nicodemus "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.... Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (John 3:3, 5, 6). Jesus was speaking of the new birth that must take place in the life of all those who would believe on the Son of God.
Our problem with sin is not that we have sinned, but that we are sinful. We sin because we are sinful, and unless our natures are changed we cannot produce righteousness. Jesus came that we might have a life that is not prone to sin; a life that is holy and righteous; a life that is in harmony with the will of God. That life is His life and He offers it to us freely if we would but believe in Him.
Too many time we as Seventh-day Adventists are like Nicodemus, trying to keep the law of God by our own efforts, not realizing that our efforts are in vain. Jesus showed this well meaning Pharisee that his righteousness was a filthy rags because it came from a sinful heart, and unless he was born of the Spirit, he could not see the kingdom of God.
The law of God is good, but in it there is no power to become righteous. The law can only point us to our great need and that is Jesus Christ. Yet how many error thinking that they have accepted Christ as their Savior and yet fall back into legalism by looking unto the law? Instead we must look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
Our salvation is not found in the death of Jesus but by His life, and that life is to live within us. His Spirit is to reside in our souls that we may become holy and righteous. "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them." (Ezekiel 36:26, 27).
My friend, it is not enough to be born of the water, you must be born of the Spirit. The very life of the Son of God must live within you. We must be able to say as the apostle Paul said "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20).
God bless,
