My friend, the word of God is more than just a collection of words or phrases, it is the power of God to transform our lives. The Bible introduces to us the Son of God that we may come into a knowledge of Him and as such into a knowledge of God Himself. Our salvation is more than just for us to follow the words of God, it is a transformed life.
The ceremonies and laws that God had given in the old testament were to point to the greater revelation of God in His Son. These types and ceremonies had a purpose. Even the ten commandments, though perfect, could not save us. They testified of the nature and character of God, but it did so in a limited way. Jesus said "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." (Matthew 5:17). Jesus was the fulfillment of the law, He was the law of God manifested in the flesh.
The real problem that we have with sin is not that we have sinned, but that we are inherently sinful. Thus no matter how well we control our actions, no matter how hard we try to keep the law of God we fail. The heart of the problem is that our very natures are sinful. As such the solution for our problem is found only in the life of the Son of God.
Jesus said "... I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10). It is sad that nearly the whole of the Christian world believe that Jesus came only to die for our sins, when it is His life that is to transform us. He is not to us a good example, as may would have you believe; we must experience the transforming power of His life. "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." (1 John 5:11, 12).
Our salvation is not found in the law of God. No amount of law abiding will save us for "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). What we need is a transformation of the heart. "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them." (Ezekiel 36:26, 27).
My friend, the new spirit that God desires to put within you is His Spirit manifested in His Son. "To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:" (Colossians 1:27).
God bless,
